Education & Lifelong Learning Awards

WELCOME

These three education awards reflect particular aspects of spatial planning/stakeholders that are not currently represented.

They are:

Award for Excellence in Planning Education
Student Award for Outstanding Achievement in Planning Education
Employer/Practitioner Award for Commitment to Lifelong Learning and Professional Development

Award for Excellence in Planning Education

Purpose

This award is to recognise excellence in teaching and learning in planning education.

Eligibility

It is aimed at staff teaching on RTPI accredited planning courses who either individually or as part of a group are able to demonstrate a major contribution to planning education through teaching and learning. Examples might include:
  • Innovative teaching and learning strategies
  • New approaches to curriculum design and delivery
  • Creative use of local and regional planning issues in teaching
  • Creative use of research in support of teaching
  • Inclusive and progressive widening participation strategies
  • Innovative interdisciplinary teaching and learning programmes

    Criteria

    Submitted entries must demonstrate the following:
  • Enhancement of the teaching and learning experience
  • Degree of innovation and creativity
  • Key issues that have been addressed or overcome
  • Extent to which the achievement may serve as a model of good practice and/or is transferable to other situations
  • Extent to which the achievement encourages reflection and independent thinking in students

    The Judging Process

    This will involve an assessment of written submissions, followed by short listing and then an option to interview before deciding on a final winner.

    Summary

    A short summary (2000 words maximum) detailing the initiative is required, which addresses the criteria listed above and can include illustrative material and/or electronic links. The report should clearly indicate the aims and scope of the initiative, how it has been implemented, how it could be rolled out and evidence of impact on student experience.


    1. Student Award for Outstanding Achievement in Planning Education

    Purpose

    This award is to celebrate educational excellent of students on RTPI accredited courses.

    Eligibility

    This award will be given to an exceptional student (full time/part time/distance learning/undergraduate/postgraduate) who has achieved a high level of knowledge, skill and competence in spatial planning and has shown an in-depth understanding of the complexities of planning both from theoretical and practical perspectives. Entries must be from students on RTPI accredited courses (these include combined, spatial and specialist courses). Work submitted must be from the 08-09 academic year. All entries must be put forward by the Planning School and not by individual students.

    Criteria

    Submitted entries will need to demonstrate the following:

    • An in depth understanding of spatial planning or an aspect of spatial planning
    • The ability to apply theory to practice
    • Be practice relevant
    • Developed analytical and evaluation skills
    • High quality presentation and communication skills

    Judging process

    Eligible Planning Schools are invited to put forward a maximum of two entries to the competition. The judges will choose the winner based on the work submitted.

    • Permission from the student to submit the work

    Planning Schools may submit up to two entries of student work in the form of a 5,000 word (maximum) report or design proposal equivalent to 5,000 words. The submissions must be from work the student has produced as part of the accredited course rather than a bespoke piece of work produced for this competition. The permission of the student must be sought by the Planning School prior to submitting the work and the assessment requirements and brief that the student was given must be supplied. The Planning School is required to provide a 300 word statement of support which indicates why the entry should be considered for the prize.


    3. Employer/Practitioner Award for Commitment to Lifelong Learning and Professional Development

    Purpose

    This award is to recognise excellence, commitment and support by employers to the training and development for their employees.

    Eligibility

    The award is open to all RTPI Learning Partners. The award might be made to individual Learning Partner organisations, or groups of Learning Partner employers who have worked together to produce creative responses to the challenges of providing professional development opportunities.

    Examples might include:

    • Secondments/rotations, internally or within groups of employers
    • Support for increasing skills through training programmes/policy (e.g. training technical staff towards professional status, graduate training schemes, management training schemes etc.)
    • Support for charitable work allowing employees to develop professionally
    • Creative use of IT to support professional development

    Criteria

    Submitted entries will need to demonstrate the following:

  • Extent to which the support offered benefits the individual’s professional development?
  • Extent to which the support offered benefits the organisation’s performance?
  • Extent to which the support offered benefits the profession? Is it inclusive? Does it offer equality of opportunity?
  • Degree to which the support offered contributes to advancing the practice of spatial planning?
  • Judging Process

    This will involve an assessment of written submissions, followed by short listing and then the option to interview.

    A written submission of maximum 2000 words which describes the training and professional development scheme provided by the employer and addresses the assessment criteria listed above. Some supplementary material may be submitted but must be relevant and illustrative of the scheme(s) submitted.
